Need To Stop Stuttering?

Everybody has to overcome their own personal challenges. It may be finances or health for some, for others it could be stuttering. Stuttering is a speech disorder (it can also be known as stammering) that 1% of adults suffer from. Most people are aware of this condition, but empathasing with the stutterer is something most people are ignorant of.

Stuttering can cause a lot of anxiety. This could partly be because of the social stigma and the misinformed popular conception that stuttering is associated with lower intelligence. This notion is wholly untrue, but knowing many people feel this way can cause a stutterer to be anxious and actually exacerbate the problem.

Any individual with that stutters would love to know what can be done to help them stop stammering. To date there is certainly no magic cure. You can't just suddenely take a pill and stop stuttering, unfortunately, but it is possible to find ways to lower the frequency with which you stutter and find ways to make it less stressful and noticeable.

Some of the most effective methods for how to stop stuttering are those that are based in therapy. The term used to describe this type of speech disorder is "verbal non-fluency”, so the goal for these treatments is to work toward improved fluency.

All of us experience verbal non-fluency now and again, when we forget what we were saying or pause to take a minute to get a word out, but for stutterers the problem remains constant. It may not occur all the time, but making certain sounds, pronouncing certain words can be extremely hard for a person who has a stammering problem. For this reason, the approach taken for therapy is to improve the verbal abilities of the patient.

In fluency shaping therapy, the procedure is that the stutterer is encouraged to speak at a much slower rate, elongating the vowels and consonants, really working on the phonetics of each word. This encourages smoother speech and reduced stuttering. Over time the speech develops up to a more normal level, and the individual can go and use this method in their everyday speech to help them stop stuttering.

In stuttering modification therapy the idea here is not to eliminate the stuttering, but to make it easier and less effortful, thereby removing the stress involved and making the stuttering difficult to even recognize in some cases. When working with a therapist, the stutterer recognizes their behaviors and feelings that accompany the stuttering and practice “voluntary stuttering” and confront some of their difficult sounds or words. The next thing they learn are techniques to stop the stuttering before it starts, stop once it's already started etc. This process is known as easy stuttering. Then the person works to change their self image from that of a stutterer, to a person who occasionally stutters.

There are also some medications that are supposed to help people stop stuttering, but there has not been enough detailed research on them to prove the effectiveness. Support groups can also help fellow stutterers develop a higher self image and boost their confidence levels, which can make living with a stutter easier and less stressful, which is perhaps the biggest help of all.
